Lugnano in Teverina

Located in a beautiful setting, Lugano in Teverina is without a doubt one of the most attractive centers of the zone. Risen in the early Middle Ages around a mighty castle, bastion against barbaric and Saracen invasions, the very well-kept town presents itself as a medieval jewel that is still little-known. It is home, however, to some interesting monuments, among which the Palombara Tower, the 16th-century Palazzo Ridolfi-Farnese (today municipal headquarters), and most of all the splendid Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta stand out; the Collegiate Church is one of the most important Romanesque churches in Umbria.

Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Built in the second half of the 12th century, it is considered one of the highest expressions of Romanesque Umbri. It presents a scenic portico with smooth, spiral columns and a four-sloping façade with rose window with double-turn columns. The interior is characterized by three towering naves, closed by an elevated apse (with paintings and frescoes) under which extends the crypt, which holds an alabaster Crucifix, very revered by the local people.
