San Leo Parish Church

The Parish Church of San Leo is a magnificent example of sacred medieval architecture. Risen probably in the 9th century on the original sanctuary built at the times of San Leone, in the 4th century, it is the oldest church of Montefeltro. Constructed in sandstone, it is articulated on three naves, divided by columns and pillars which form seven arches per side. In the crypt below is the chapel constructed by Leone in the 4th century. The orientation of the apse to the East and the scarce illumination with the small single-lancet windows create a mystic and ancient atmosphere; the entrance is lateral. The austere interior with three naves contains a beautiful ciborium from on the presbytery, with an dedicated inscription that explains the donation of duke Orso. Very nearby, is the Cathedral; both overlook a small field.
