Vico Lake

Lago di Vico (Vico Lake) formed in the cave of the volcano with the same name, when, 100,000 years ago, its activity ceased. Originally the lake was much larger and perfectly circular, within an island in the middle of the volcanic cone. Then the Etruscans and then the Romans dug an underground stream to drain the waters, lowering the level by around 20 meters. Then the Farnese family enlarged the underground canal, giving life the the Vicario stream and as a consequence, lowered the level around another 20 meters. The lake then changed its shape, and today is shaped like a horseshoe, and the island of Mount Venere has become a peninsula.
At the extreme northwestern part of the lake, it is possible to go for beautiful walks on nice paths made from dirt roads today closed off to vehicular traffic, among landscapes that vary from hazelnut trees to marshlands, to more intricate wooded areas. It is possible to catch sight of different birds, including the great crested grebe, with its curious mating ritual that is anticipated with a series of acrobatic swirls and the offer of a clump of algae for the female.
The birds, who by now are used to living in a natural park, are not very intimidated by humans, and they can be seen at a relatively close distance.
There are also different areas equipped for picnics.
Leaving from the junction with the restaurant "Belle Venere" behind you,you can even go up to Mount Venere, from which you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view. It is possible to go up to all of the three peaks: the last, called "pozzo del Diavolo" (well of the devil) and the real mouth of Vico crater. Inside nocturnal birds of prey and bats have built their nests.
