Trieste Teresiana city

Even if the large and illuminated sovereign Maria Terese, who became empress of Austria in 1748, in her forty-year reign never set her feet in Trieste, this period profoundly marked the destinies and the form of this city. In fact, her choice to make it the main outflow in the Adriatic and port of the emperor gave great impulse to the urban development, and a new city was constructed next to the old center, on an area of primitive salt marshes. This new expansion, from the straight streets and elegant buildings, was immediately called "Teresiana".
Taking a walk on its pedestrian streets, on which mighty façades of noble palaces overlook, we run into the small figure of Umberto Saba, great poet from Trieste, a bronze statue stolen twice by irreverent people or collectors, and nearby it, the historic antique bookshop which belonged to the poet which is now run by the son of his helper.
We go wandering around in two beautiful cafes, among the few that have survived and are intact; in one of the two is a reserved table in a Claudio Magris corner.
Trieste boasts many churches, and thus we pass to take a glance at the Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, where, however, you cannot enter; the Serb Orthodox church and Greek Orthodox church. About half of the quarter is split by the Grand Canal, with an attractive effect; the canal originally arrived at the Church of S. Antonio Taumaturgo, as you see even in a painting from the beginning of the 20th century which is at the Revoltella Museum; then a part was blocked and today amkes up Piazza S. Antonio. There were many diatribes on this operation, and still today there is a group that would like to restore the original situation.
