Italy Travelguide Northern Italy The walled village of Vigoleno
Versione italiana  English Version

The walled village of Vigoleno

The ancient village is nested over the crest dividing the valleys of the streams Ongina and Tirone and is surrounded by Stirone natural Park. It is a walled village, a perfect sample of Middle Age housing, its structures intact and rich of historical heritage. Completely contained in embattled stony walls that follow its perimeter and have on the top a patrol path for defensive purpose. From there today you may admire splendid panoramas of the Stirone river valley.
Just beside the entrance to the village a keep, a huge square tower, that today hosts an informative service with a wide photographic documentation about Vigoleno and its history. Following the patrol path from here we get to the second tower, in the area hosting the more residential portion of the fortress.
When we enter the village we immediately find the main square, with a fountain, an historical cannon and the oratory of Our Lady of the Graces.
Eastward of the main square there is the most important church, St. George's, a simple but dignified example of religious Romanesque architecture, with three naves, of whom the central one decidedly higher; the bell tower has a square base.
The Midge Age village of Vigoleno is certified as One of the "Most Beautiful Italian Villages" and deserved the Orange Flag by Italian Touring Club.
After visiting the fortress we suggest a promenade along the silent alleys of the village, enjoying a timeless atmosphere and overlooking here and there to admire the panorama of the valley.
