Tiscali (Nuragic village)

In a very unusual position, it's to say over the top of Mount Tiscali (518m.a.s.l.), there is a huge hollow generated by the collapse of a cave.
Today the space is shaped like leather bottle, with a diameter of more than 100m at its basis and a superior light of approximately 75m.
These characters alone would be sufficient to deserve a visit, but what is still more attractive are the rests of a village dating back to the last period of nuragic civilisation (VI-V century b.C.)
The village was entirely built along the walls of the hollow, so that it's impossible to see it if you do not penetrate inside, which you do through a wide fence in the rock.
The place was inhabited after the golden period of nuragic civilisation and its rests are very different from the classic ones: the walls are no more made of Cyclopean blocks but of smaller stones cemented with grout. Some archaeologists think it must have been an untraceable shelter in the period of Carthaginian invasions.
When, towards the end of XIX century, the village was discovered, it was still in very good conditions, but unfortunately the following negligence and pillages have seriously damaged it.
Anyhow the mysterious and ancient charm of the place still resists, also because of the long path to reach it that gradually dips the visitor in another age, far from modernity, searching for the mysterious and untraceable phantom town of Sardinia's Supramonte.
Tiscali may be reached both from Dorgali and from Lanaitto's Valley, both the tracks are very beautiful and propose astounding views.
Anyhow the track from Lanaitto's Valley is very badly signalled, so we suggest the one from Dorgali.
Start from Dorgali on the Orientale Sarda road towards Baunei. After a few kilometres, on the right there is the road going down and crossing the Valley of Oddoene as far as the little bridge of S'Abba Arva.
The bridge collapsed in 2004 and was replaced by a pedestrian one, so you have to park the car. The bridge crossed we turn to right and after about 200m we can see the track to Tiscali on our left, riding straight towards mountains.
Going up will request about two hours, it will be better to avoid the hottest hours. At the moment the site is in charge of a cooperative that cures the maintenance and surveillance, there is a ticket to pay.
