Italy Travelguide Sardinia Nuraghe Mereu
Versione italiana  English Version

Nuraghe Mereu

The Nuraghe civilisation still presents many unresolved mysteries. Nothing written came to us from these people and, when Romans (with their historians) arrived in Sardinia, this ancient civilisation had already declined. So, lacking historic evidence, we can only base on archaeological rests, on the thousands of nuraghes spread all over Sardinia.
And this is where the mystery gets thicker!
Nuraghe Mereu is a typical example: two towers, a cylindrical one and a quadrangular one rise up in a strategic point over Flumineddu's Valley, the enormous stones employed to build it immediately make one think of a fortress (before the invention of grouts enormous blocks where used to prevent the enemy to dismantle the walls). Anyhow... the nuraghe is smaller than a house, to small to be defensible!
What was it for then? In Sardinia they estimate there are 3000to8000 nuraghes similar to this one. Which was the life of the people inhabiting them?
Mereu Nuraghe is difficult to reach. That's why our advice is to go by your self only if you have detailed maps and directions. It is anyhow a destination worthy visiting, not only as it is well preserved, been still untouched the great domed hall, but also because the place where it rises is a spectacular one: the uncontaminated Flunineddu's river Valley and Gorropu Gorge. A place where time seems to have come to a stand still thousands of years ago, where probably the ancient people of nuraghes use to see the same oak tree forests we see now.
Ten minutes downstream of Nuraghe Mereu we find Nuraghe Gorropu, less elaborated then the first one, but still interesting.
