Alps and Dolomites
The Alps are the highest and largest mountain chain in Europe. But below the high rock faces and glaciers there are splendid forests, rivers, lakes and mountain villages where a thousand-year-old culture integrates with alpine nature. In addition to splendid national parks such as Great Paradise and Stelvio we also have to remember the Dolomites, which many people consider the most beautiful mountains in the world. This is definitely an ideal area for lovers of hiking and mountaineering.

The Cinque Terre and Apuane and Marittime Alps.
A landscape where the Apennines Mountains reach the sea, creating what we know today as the Five Lands (Cinque Terre). Cities on the sea, such as the proud Genoa with its large harbour and mountain villages, monasteries and trendy sea resorts. To the south, the marble Apuane Alps, where the world famous Carrara white marble is mined.
Liguria's cuisine is not as rich as that of other regions but is very tasty and mostly vegetable-based. The wines, which are made in the hills, are top quality.

Umbria and Marche
The spirit that permeates the hills and woods of this region sinks its roots into medieval times: we are in an area of fortresses and castles, of struggles between ancient noble families and papacy, of retreats and monasteries. An area of towns that rivalled in art and beauty for centuries, such as Perugia, Urbino, Assisi, Norcia, Fabriano, Narni, etc. An area of soft hills, a prelude to the hardness of the mountains, of flowering plateaus, of magicians and great saints.
The cuisine is rich and based on pork meat and pork cold cuts, truffles, exquisite olive oil, top quality legumes and a wide variety of wines to accompany tasty dishes.

Etruria, Tuscany, Chianti, Siena and Viterbo
It's the land enclosed between the Arno and Tiber rivers, central and southern Tuscany and northern Lazio. A land characterised by hills, woods and volcanic lakes of primitive origin; an area with the most beautiful cities of art, full of countless treasures. Here, 3000 years ago, lived the enigmatic Etruscan people, whose decline saw the birth of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages it was the land of proud republics, such as Florence, Pisa and Lucca... then of noble Seignories and the scene of fierce contrasts between popes and emperors. It was also the cradle of Renaissance. Evidence of this incredible past can be found throughout this area.
Tuscan wines and cuisine are among the most renowned in the world. The cuisine is made of simple but refined dishes, embellished by the best extra virgin olive oil. There are too many famous wines to name.

Roman and Latin Country
Since '700 the countryside around Rome has attracted many painters for its charm. Pastures, olive trees, lakes, hills, sea and ancient Roman ruins. Although Rome is a big, modern city, it doesn't take long to step outside into a relaxed atmosphere, to meet remains of ancient times sunk in a rural landscape rich in woods and lakes. Small historic centres, splendid villas from any period (from Roman Villa Adriana to 18th century Villa d'Este, to the villas in Frascati), ancient harbours, castles, mythical gardens like Ninfa's Oasis, spiritual places like Subiaco's monasteries… here you can find something for all tastes. The cuisine is simple and traditional. Wines are good, especially the white ones.

Abruzzo and Apennines Mountains
One of the most majestic European mountain chains, reaching 2993 metres high and where the southernmost European glacier is located. Still inhabited by bears, wolves and chamois, the Apennines are not well-known by international hikers and mountaineers (who are used to considering the Alps as the Italian mountains); however, it is for this very reason that this region is so attractive, as it isn't crowded with tourists. Man established himself within these huge mountains, which have provided him with stone to build fortresses and castles, lonely retreats and big monasteries, all in a landscape of arousing beauty. The cuisine is rich and based on pork meat and pork cold cuts, truffles, exquisite oil and legumes, homemade pastas, sweets and cakes.

Sardinia
One of the world's most beautiful islands, characterised by very white beaches and also by mountains with uncontaminated nature (Gennargentu and Supramone national parks), with ancient forests inhabited by mufflons, areas still unknown to mass tourism. Here you will discover ruins of the mysterious and unknown civilisation of the Nuraghe, who, between 3500 and 3000 years ago, built cycloptic constructions that we still have difficulty understanding.
The cuisine is very unique and interesting: exquisite cakes, sweets and cheeses, top quality wines of all kinds.

Sicily
It is a place absolutely different from any other, an island that is a small continent, characterised by a unique rural landscape and by cities of art. It is where Magna Grecia's architecture meets Medieval, Arab and Baroque. It's a garden with intense scents, full of citrus plantations, almonds trees, pistachios and fruits of all kinds. But it is also the land of Etna, the most active volcano in Europe and of the Eolian islands, also characterised by active volcanic phenomena.
Here a beach holiday meets with archaeology, art and natural wonders. Many say Sicily has the most pleasant climate in the world.
The cuisine is rich but extremely refined and elaborate, based on fish and also on meat and on many very savoury vegetables. Sweets and cakes, made with almonds, pistachios, honey, are incredibly good. All wines and liquors are superb, in particular the strong wine from Marsala.

Adriatic Coast
The Adriatic coast is characterised by beaches and sea resorts very well equipped for tourism, but there are also beautiful cities rich in art and architecture, such as Rimini, Pesaro, Ancona... Besides the immediate inland there are many other sights of interest both natural and artistic to be found: San Marino's Republic, countless castles and fortresses, beautiful and lively towns such as Recanati, Macerata, Ascoli Piceno and charming natural parks for hiking and trekking.
Here, too, the cuisine combines seafood with the products of a fertile inland, yielding exquisite and characteristic dishes that should be enjoyed with famous white and noble red wines.

Venice and its land
When the Roman Empire fell many settled in this area, where the moist lands at the Po River delta created a formidable defence against barbarians. The most peculiar and world famous result of this unusual relationship between man and land is no doubt Venice. But this region has much more to offer: not only splendid cities of art, such as Treviso, Padova, Ravenna, Vicenza, etc., but also other fascinating places like Comacchio's Valleys, little unknown islands in the lagoon, splendid ancient country villas, beautiful beaches.
The cuisine of the whole area is very rich and varied, a mix between country cuisine and seafood. Each place has its own typical dishes, making it a true paradise for food lovers. The wines are top quality, especially the white wines of the region.

Vesuvius, Cilento, Pollino and Calabria
Ancient Romans' "Campania felix", with its gentle cultivated hills that enclose the heart of the mythical volcano Vesuvius, whose eruption 2000 years ago buried the Roman cities of Ercolano and Pompei. Today we can walk on their roads and get an idea of what life was like then. This area contains treasures from all periods: from Paestum's temples, evidence of Greek colonization, to the huge 700 Caserta's royal palace. To the south we find Cilento's relief over the sea (a national park), Pollino's massif and Sila (both natural parks, offering many opportunities for trekking and other outdoor activities), Matera's Sassi, an incredible place that was the set for Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ", etc. The cuisine changes a lot from one area to another: very refined in Matera's surroundings, strong and spicy in Campania and Calabria, with exquisite sweets. Top quality wines of all kinds: white, red and rosé.

Gargano and Salento
Known as the meeting point between Europe and the East, Salento is an area rich in history, which is revealed more in the countryside than in the cities: just think of "trulli", a unique type of country building, or of country manor houses among thousand-year-old olive tree plantations. The sea is also spectacular.
In the north quickly rises Gargano's headland, a huge tuff mountain covered by ancient forests (today a national park) that slopes steeply into the Adriatic Sea. Near Gargano there are also some big coastal lakes. Going south, at the end of the heel, the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, each characteristic in its own way. This area is known for its beautiful traditional white towns and the fancy baroque architecture in Lecce and Martina Franca. The cuisine is rich and refined, based on seafood, meats and on many very savoury vegetables. The wines are superb: dry white and full-bodied reds.

Elba Island
The third wide Italian island, Elba includes in a small area an incredible variety of landscapes that has no equal in the world. A luxuriant nature and an extremely complex geology consent to explore a lot of different sites: snow white sandy beaches, small creeks with dark pebbles and rock walls of metallic colours. And the Volterraio castle, the Medicean fortresses, Napoleon's Villa, Elba island is rich of historical heritage. Its wines are delicious, and Aleatico, made of withered grapes, is very well known among connoisseurs.
