479 - Parco delle Madonie - Palermo

Description

The complex of buildings of the farm, in the municipality of Polizzi Generosa, is one of the most interesting examples of XIX century farming settlements of the hinterland countries in Sicily and stands on grounds of increasing altitude from 560m to 960m a.s.l.
The farm house, cottages and the whole farm have been property of one of the first and most important families of XIX century agrarian bourgeoisie in the area of Madonie mountains for five generations.
The 13 room have been obtained in the cottages where share croppers lived with their families. The restoration maintained unaltered the original character of a Sicilian rural house, with wooden truss roofs, lofts, traditional frames and plaster, Sicilian terracotta tiles floors with original period enamelled ceramic inserts and naked stone walls.
The restaurant in the ancient barn hosts up to 200 people, the stone walls and its severe architecture with perched arches accurately restored, the large fire place at the end of the hall, the warm terracotta tiles floor and the opportune lighting give to the space a unique, unreal, nearly magic atmosphere. An elegant living room and a suggestive bar, both realised in ancient store houses, complete the whole.
At guests' disposition a swimming pool with sight of the fields, with a gazebo, sun beds, armchairs and beach umbrellas and an ample terrace from which enjoy a relaxing landscape. The house is classified four stars.

Surroundings

Remarkable is Parco delle Madonie, the second park instituted in Sicily in 1989, the natural reserve (15 comuni, 39.972 hectares).
Landscape is an heterogeneus ensemble of different environments. Deep valleys with rivers and severe mountains overlook on sea. Here we found a particular flora: pine tree, broom, garrigue, heather, euforbia and corbezzolo.
In mountain's area yuou find holm hoak , beech tree, juniper, mistletoe, hawthorn.Park holds the main part of the 2600 botanical species of Sicily. Fauna is rich: foxes, weasels, porcupines, hares, owls, imperial raven and the extraordinay royal eagle.
Reachable by car within an hour, such as: Palermo, Cefalù, the temples of Agrigento, the mosaics of Piazza Armerina, the villages of the Madonie (Polizzi Generosa, Petralia Soprana, Castelbuono, Gangi), and the beautiful Sperlinga.

Activities

The house has a small library with important books about Sicilian culture and a wine bar where we organise tasting of local products. The swimming pool is open from June to September, whilst pleasant promenades are possible inside the property, leading to suggestive valleys. Free climbing may be practiced on the rocky hill behind the house.

Food, wine and crafts

In our restaurant we use chiefly recipes of local traditions and generally Sicilian, but we also revisit these from a modern slant adding further sophistication without diminishing the typical taste of local products. Typical cheeses are served with honey or home made pickled candied fruit in a spicy syrup, freshly baked bread accompanied with olive or aubergine pathé or a green sauce made with home bred aromatic herbs. At breakfast buffet home freshly made cakes, pies jams and biscuits.
Beside it's possible to taste and by the extra-virgin olive oil produced in the farm.
