Surroundings

Also in Casamassella, as in all Salento area, tourism is increasing, but a discreet, high quality tourism, of people able to appreciate the beautiful nature of the Coast, and the cultural treasures of Otranto and of its inland. The first documents about Casamassella Castle and about the village that developed around it date back to the Middle Age, when, in the reign of Carlo d'Angiò, the Castel, surrounded with a ditch with the drawbridge, was the fortified residence of Ruggero Maramonte, the local feudatory. We don't know if the building existed before, in any case it is ascertained that human settlements in the area date back to very ancient times. Thanks to its special position, in the immediate vicinity of Otranto, but sheltered from the frequent raids of Barbaresque pirates, from Turky and Algeria, the Casamassella Castle was a safe and prestigious residence, longed for by some of the most aristocratic families of Terra d'Otranto, that in the course of the centuries took possession of it.
In the outskirts: Otranto, with its Cathedral accomplished in 1088 (it is the greatest of all the Apulian churches), Gallipoli town, the prehistoric settlements in Rivabella and S. Pietro de' Samari, and Lecce, the Baroque town, also known as the Florence of Southern Italy.
