280 - Valle d' Aosta

view photos

Description

The shelter is located at 2410 meters above sea level, surrounded by fields and rocky towers. It is a typical Valle d"Aosta building (outside in stone and inside in wood).
The rooms are done in wood, all with bunk beds. They are for 2, 4, 6, 8, and one dormitory room for 30 people. The bathrooms are shared, on the same floor as the rooms; there are 5 washbasins and 3 wc's. There is only one shower with hot water!
This is a TRUE alpine shelter, not reachable by streets; you can arrive only by foot; restocking is done on foot, by donkey, and by helicopter. The electricity is produced with a hydroelectric central line and with solar panels.
Water arrives from one spring that flows behind the shelter (and it's very good!). Who arrives all the way up here must know that they will not find the comforts of hotels, but they will surely not be disappointed.
The shelter is reachable by 2-hour walk among larches and marmots. To welcome you, in addition to the management, there will also be two nice donkeys.
Up here you can taste typical Valle d'Aosta dishes and live an exciting experience. This is the ideal place for meeting special people who love the mountains!

Surroundings

The shelter is reachable by walking two hours among larches and marmots departing from Bionaz. On the path that takes you to the shelter you will find a mountain pasture that is home to around 120 cows that make the famous fontina cheese. At 500m of level distance from the shelter there is the Swiss border and the passage used by smugglers until 30 years ago. In front of the shelter are the remains of a guard post from the French Revolution.
In only 30 minutes it is possible to go up to Plan de la Sabla (2600 m).
Other simple excursions are Col de Chardonney (3186 m) passing by  Col di Crête Sèche (2899 m), and Col Berlon (3009 m).
The frequented classic way of Mont Gelé (3518 m) passing by Col du Mont Gelé (3144 m), while a little more challenging are the itineraries that lead to Monte Cervo (3441 m) and Becca d'Epicoun (or Becca della Rayette, 3529 m).
Interesting are the climbs to Monte di Crête Sèche (2941 m), Mont Berlon (3128 m), Becca Di Chardonney (3447 m) and Catena del Morion (3497 m).
Attractive are the crossings of Col du Mont Gelé at the turn of the camp Regondi-Gavazzi (2590 m) with descent to the inhabited Ollomont, towards  Cabanne de Chanrion in Switzerland e the descent along Alta Via n. 3 leading to the shelter Prarayer.

Activities

It's possible to go trekking, mountain climbing, via ferrata, rock climbing, and to relax a lot! The shelter is a departure base for many climbs to the majestic and panoramic summits that surround it. For those less expert, it is possible to reach other shelters both in Switzerland and in Italy in less than 5 hours of walking.

Food, wine and crafts

There is never a shortage of polenta accompanied by typical Valle d'Aosta dishes (wild game, mushrooms, and vegetables). The kitchen is open 24 hours a day for typical snacks made from cold cuts and cheeses!
